Twitter Records and Fun Facts

Twitter record hit for the most followers goes to Katy Perry!

On June 16th 2017 Katy Perry smashed the record for followers on Twitter by hitting the mark of 100,000,000 Followers. Yes you read that right! 100 Million followers, which makes her the world record holder. She is the first person to gain so many followers on Twitter, ever! Katy Perry, born Kathryn Hudson, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. She was born into a highly religious family of pastors and was not allowed to listen to pop or rock music by her pastor parents. She started singing lessons when she was 9 and she wasn’t allowed to watch MTV or any music channels. She learned to play guitar at age 13 and soon began rebelling against her parents, including piercing her own nose.

She began pursuing a music career and made several trips to Nashville to record a Gospel album, accompanied by her mother. It ultimately flopped and only sold around 300 copies. She was introduced to Freddy Mercury’s music and “Queen” by a friend in high school and began mingling with various groups in school. She was always changing her appearance, which is something still characteristic of Katy to this day. Focused on her music, she moved to Los Angeles to work with producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, who had worked with such artists as Christina Aguilera and Alanis Morissette. She was only 17, and being on her own proved difficult. “It was five years of living in L.A. with no money, writing bad checks, selling my clothes to make rent and borrowing money,” she told Seventeen magazine. Perry also experienced a string of disappointments before getting her big break. She and Ballard were unable to find a record company willing to take them on. After having three record deals fall apart, Perry finally signed with Capitol in 2007.

She went on to release her first album “Ur so Gay” which was recognised by pop stars such as Madonna and became a talking point on the pop scene. She was gaining recognition. Her smash hit “I Kissed a Girl” launched her to worldwide fame. Since then she has become one of the highest paid celebrities, with over 33,000,000 in earnings. She is on the Forbes 100 list of 100 highest paid celebrities. She has endorsements for Cover Girl, Claire’s and H&M. She earned 25,000,000 alone for judging American Idol, which is more than any other judge so far.

She joined Twitter in 2009 and has been tweeting the highs and also the lows during her career, with over 8,500 tweets and has debuted songs, videos and announced things on Twitter before anywhere else. In connection with her new album, Witness, in June, she live-streamed her life, Big Brother style, so fans could watch her every move, including sleeping! It all took place in a house called Witness Headquarters with cameras in every room, including the bathroom. Confessions similar to Big Brother in a confession room, were held every morning with questions from fans all over the world, chiming in to ask personal questions. Naturally, her album and tour ticket sales have gone through the roof. The Witness tour ’17-’18 will be a huge success. All updates will no doubt be tweeted and its pretty much guaranteed to be where you hear it first!

Here are some fun Twitter facts and other records:

Twitter was launched 10 years ago by a man called Jack Dorsey. At the time it was actually named Twttr and described as ‘a short burst of inconsequential information’. Amazingly, the site went on to gain a huge following of 300,000,000 users. The first ever tweet was posted by Jack in 2006. It read ‘Just setting up my Twttr’ posted at 9.50 on the 21st of March 2006. After collaborating board members spent the day brainstorming, at the Podcast company Odeo, it developed a huge following very quickly. After the first year the social media operation had gone from 20,000 tweets a day to 60,000 a day.

Today there are an estimated 6,000 tweets a second, which is 350,000 a minute. That works out at 500,000,000 a day. Add it all up and that equals 200 Billion tweets a year!

Here are some more Twitter records –
