DIY Kids Room Wall Art Memories

diy-kids-room-wall-art-memories

We had so much fun making these DIY kids room wall art memories. We got some non-toxic paints and a brush, then began painting baby’s hands and feet to make cool multi-coloured footprints and handprints. They turned out way better than we imagined and we got some photos long the way.

Apart from looking pretty on the walls, they are lasting memories and the kids will be proud to see their handiwork on the walls. I got the idea from a present that was given to us a few years ago which had a little round frame and an ink pad to get a baby hand and footprint.

I had been meaning to use it since then and finally got around to it, even though the frame is too small for my 3 year old now, however we have a 1year old but I wanted to get both of their hands and footprints so decided to get some paints and make our own.

We also had an idea to put little foot prints along the wall each year as they grow but it is quite difficult to manage and we were worried we would make a mess on the wall. That was when we decided to make the prints on paper and frame them each year. We can write the year and names on them as keepsakes too.

It is a fun project but quite messy so we knew to have the bath ready for when we finished printing. I used a brush as it seemed the handiest. I only had a standard paint brush and it was easy enough to apply. I used plenty of water to make it quicker t apply. Tickly feet were all part of the fun. Our 1year old was a bit difficult to hold still so hers didn’t turn out as well but it was our first attempt so I guess we will try again soon for better prints.

We just randomly placed the hands and feet wherever but I really liked to ones that were off-centre and with just one print on them. The ones with the 2 hand prints next to each other were pretty cool too.

I tried mixing the colours together for a fun effect. You can play around with the colours by layering and I suppose you could match in with your baby/kids room decor. I loved the random colours though, as I let her choose the ones she liked so it made it more her own design.

My mum was here on holidays while we made these and she took home a couple of souvenirs to put on her own wall at home or on the fridge door. I will probably give her a framed one next time. They would make brilliant presents for grandparents and family. You could even make cards out of them for special occasions. They are the kind of things people cherish and hold onto.

I recommend having another helper who can hold the baby and help with the mess! I was glad to have help since it does require a bit of clean-up and organisation along the way. I used wet wipes to clean off the colours but you can repaint over the paint as it dries quickly enough. The wet wipes came in handy for cleaning everything so I recommend having those on hand. I also put down black bags on the floor and table.

I think the main thing is to enjoy the whole process and have fun. Don’t expect the prints to be perfect at all! They will take a good few attempts and try and keep the kids/baby in one room so that those little hand and footprints don’t end up everywhere! You don’t want them all over your lovely clean walls haha. Thankfully the paint dries quick, however there were a few on the kitchen tiles after the footprints so either put down the black bags or make sure to do it on tiles.

Remember to wash those baby feet when you bath them afterwards or if they have a shower, make sure you wash the feet soles. It takes a little scrubbing so they might need help with that. It is best to use non-toxic paint for kids. You can find it in most stationary shops.
