Willy Wonka Chocolate Afternoon Tea at the Chesterfield was a delightful experience full of sweet treats, chocolate-inspired, a golden ticket and even Willy Wonka himself.

I had my first afternoon tea at the Ritz last November. Since then, I’m hooked on dainty sandwiches and ickle-fancy cakes. It always seems like a real posh treat to me.

I’m all about ‘themed’ restaurants or days-out and what could not be to love about a ‘Willy Wonka Chocolate Afternoon Tea’, I mean seriously? The Chesterfield menu boasts roast chicken with grain mustard mayonnaise and with nibbed almonds on white bread (delicious), home-made warm chocolate chip scones with Cornish clotted cream (err yes) and a bright orange and green Oompa Loompa cupcake (yum)!

The Chesterfield, situated in London’s Mayfair, is near Green Park tube station.  The restaurant had a soft piano playing throughout our tea and it was nice to be seated in the conservatory filled with greenery as the rain fell onto the roof. It was calming and overall very pleasant.

We were greeted by the hotel’s doorman who took our coats and whisked them away to the cloakroom. Our waiter seated us at a table for two and provided a welcome ‘fizzy-lifting’ drink of cream soda, cranberry juice and popping candy in a teeny-tiny bottle with red-striped paper straw. It was that nice, I am pretty temped to re-create it at home.

Next, Willy Wonka visited the table with golden tickets in one-hand and gobstoppers on a silver-platter in the other. The gentleman was incredibly witty and asked where my Nan was from as her thick-Brummy accent shone straight through. I will say, unfortunately one is not supposed to open the golden ticket until visiting the Chesterfield in the future. This is because they contain special offers to use of the day of opening the envelope. The temptation is unreal!

From the menu we requested no egg sandwiches, as neither of us are too keen and the waiters were happy to oblige. Likewise, we were offered to the unique specially-crafted for the Chesterfield chocolate and vanilla loose leaf tea. I don’t usually drink hot drinks, so I am hesitant when it comes to trying new ones, however, you cannot have ‘afternoon tea’ without the tea. But in fact, I ended up drinking the entire pot alongside a glass of lemonade whereas my Nan swapped hers for a normal traditional English breakfast tea. It’s a strong flavour and one requires a sweet-tooth to enjoy it, I’d say!

The sandwich and cake try arrived not long after we were seated. We ate our way through most of it. I even asked for more sandwiches and chocolate scones, which of course my polite requests was met by the staff at no further cost.

I think, the highlight for me was the attention to detail in the cake selection. It included a brightly coloured Oompa Loompa cupcake complete with mini toadstools, a Golden egg and two Chocolate Wonka bar, which inside was a homemade crispy-cake come rocky-road bar. Our platter was missing the blueberry macaroon, although I think they’d ran out, which was a real shame. However, what we did have was delicious.  We couldn’t finish all the cakes so our waiter offered to box them to take home.

Upon leaving the restaurant, we were given the opportunity to fill pick n’ mix bags with sweets of our choice. I felt this was a nice touch and a great way to end an authentic experience. The Willy Wonka Chocolate Afternoon tea was awesome and I’ll never forget it. I’d definitely like to return back to the Chesterfield in the future.
