Magic Mushrooms could Treat Depression

A hallucinogen found in magic mushrooms has been shown to successfully “rewire” the brains of people with untreatable depression.

A small study was conducted on 19 patients who were given a small dose of ‘psilocybin‘ which is the psychadelic ingredient found in magic mushrooms.

Half of the participating patients ceased to be depressed and experienced different brain activity which lasted around 5 weeks.

The study has raised hope of successful future treatment of the otherwise incurable depression.

The scans suggest that the compound is having a positive effect.

The Imperial College London performed MRI scans on the brains of the patients before and after the psilocybin was consumed.

Here’s what the study revealed –

Psilocybin affected 2 key areas of the brain.

  1. The Amygdala – involving our emotions such as anxiety and fear, had become less active. The greater the reduction, the more of an improvement was seen in the patients.
  2. The default mode network – a collaboration of different brain regions became more stable after taking the drug.

Researchers found the drug reset key neural circuits and induced stability in brain networks that link to depression.

Dr Robert Carhart-Harris, the head of psychedelic research at the Imperial, said that the depressed brain was “clammed up” and that the psychedelic experience “reset it”.

One patient exclaimed they had been ‘reborn, reset, rebooted’ and another claimed ‘my brain has been defragged and cleaned up – like a computer hard drive’.

This study is only the beginning, and remains a small study.

Larger studies are required before psilocybin could be accepted as a treatment for depression.

Scientists warn against self-medicating with the class A hallucinogenic drug.

So what do you think? It’s worth a try I reckon. Not the self-medication – the tests and study.

Could this be the way forward? I hope so!
