ultimate-2018-reading-list

By Just A Millennial Girl

I don’t typically make New Year’s Resolutions. I believe that if you want to do something, you’ll do it and you don’t necessarily need the new year to do so. Reading is one activity that I’ve been trying to do more of in my personal life. It’s been said that the difference between where you are today and where you’ll be five years from now will be found in the quality of books you’ve read and the people you’ve met. So, here is my 2018 reading list! If there’s any book you’d like to join me in reading, drop me a line on my Contact page.

JANUARY

Rich Bitch by Nicole Lapin

Nicole Lapin is a finance expert who started her journey at the age of 18. She went on to become the youngest anchor ever at CNN and then to claim the same title at CNBC, where she anchored the only global finance show on the network, “Worldwide Exchange,” while contributing financial reports to MSNBC and “Today.” Lapin has also served as a business anchor and special correspondent for Bloomberg Television.  She has the credentials to talk about money, and I’m ready to listen. I chose this book because January is the perfect time to get your financial plan in order.

FEBRUARY

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Angie Thomas was born, raised, and still resides in Jackson, Mississippi. The Hate U Give is a story about a young woman; Star, who lives in an impoverished part of town while going to a suburban prep school on the other side of town. Starr’s world is turned upside down when she witnesses her best friend die at the hands of the police.

MARCH

#Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso

Sophia Amoruso’s rebellious adolescent years molded her into a successful businesswoman. Now, founder and chairman of a $250-million-plus fashion retailer with 350+ employees she has transformed her life. The book embodies the idea of female empowerment and following your own path. The #Girlboss Workbook is also available for those who desire to see their goals and progress on paper. I can’t wait to tackle this!

APRIL

Tiffany Haddish, a comedian and actress, writes a captivating and edgy book about the account of her life. Tiffany discusses how she learned to survive by making people laugh. A book of inspirational stories delivered through honest accounts and comedy is sure to excite.

MAY

You Are a Badass – Jen Sincero

So, I’ve actually read this book before. In this New York Times Bestseller, the author discusses ways to get your shit together. She makes you take accountability for who you are and helps you understand why you are the way you are. I really enjoyed this book and I think it’s the perfect mid-year read to help you reset.

JUNE

The Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley

This captivating story of Saroo, who was lost on a train in India at the age of five. Saroo survived for several weeks on the streets of Kolkata before being picked up and taken to an orphanage. He was eventually adopted by a family in Austrailia but was always curious about his roots. After becoming a young man, he used Google Earth to find his home and ultimately set out to find his mother.

JULY

We’re Going to Need More Wine – Gabrielle Union

A raw and honest book of essays by actress, Gabrielle Union. In this passionate book of short stories and essays, Union shares her thoughts on love, money, power, race, and politics. I will definitely be enjoying this book with a glass of wine.

AUGUST

The Twelve Tribes of Hattie – Ayana Mathis

A woman’s tragic story about how she escapes Georgia in 1923 in pursuit of the American dream in Philadelphia. Instead, she marries a man she will grow to hate—especially after the deaths of her firstborn children. She goes on to have more children and she prepares them for the troubles they are likely to encounter. Each child’s perspective is carried out in each chapter.

SEPTEMBER

A captivating story of a young woman who was abducted at the age 19 and lives in a 11×11 foot room. This story, however; is told through the inventive and funny voice of her five-year-old son, Jack. To mom, the room is a prison but to Jack the room is home. I’m very excited about this read!

OCTOBER

Yes Please! – Amy Poehler

“In Amy Poehler’s highly anticipated first book, Yes Please, she offers up a big juicy stew of personal stories, funny bits on sex and love and friendship and parenthood and real life advice (some useful, some not so much), like when to be funny and when to be serious. Powered by Amy’s charming and hilarious, biting yet wise voice, Yes Please is a book full of words to live by.”- Goodreads

NOVEMBER

The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao -Junot Díaz

“Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. From his home in New Jersey, where he lives with his old-world mother and rebellious sister, Oscar dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fukœ-the curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still waiting for his first kiss, is just its most recent victim.”

DECEMBER

The Universe Has Your Back – Gabrielle Bernstein

“My commitment with this book is to wake up as many people as possible to their connection to faith and joy. In that connection, we can be guided to our true purpose- to be love and spread love. These words can no longer be cute buzz phrases that we merely post on social media. Rather, these words must be our mission. The happiness, safety, and security we long for lies in our commitment to love.’ Through acceptance, surrender, and a commitment to her continually evolving spiritual path, New York Times –best-selling author and international speaker Gabrielle Bernstein has been transforming her fear into faith. Her stories and universal lessons provide a framework for releasing the blocks to what everyone most longs for- happiness, security, and clear direction. These lessons can help us relinquish the need to control in order to relax into a sense of certainty and freedom – to stop chasing life and truly live. Ride the swell of your energy and true power to find strength when you are down, synchronicity and support when you are lost, safety in the face of uncertainty, and joy in what might otherwise be pain. Bernstein has secrets to reveal, and she is determined to unleash the presence of your power with the comforting knowledge that the Universe has your back.”- Gabrielle Bernstein
