Barcelona is a wonderful city to explore, with so many beautiful buildings and things to see and do. I had only one day to see it all, which was pretty ambitious but I managed to see what I considered the main highlights! I would have loved to spend more time there but we were heading to the Costa del Sol so we made the most of our one day. Here are the best bits of my trip around Barcelona in a day –
Of course, the number 1 highlight on pretty much everyones list is La Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s astonishing architectural wonder does not disappoint. It is visible from afar and towers well above everything else. A true sight to behold. It was still being constructed at the time of my visit but I believe it is finished now. Amazing.
If you don’t mind climbing lots of steps, it is worth doing the tour of the interior and going to the top. The architectural features are stunning and the view is worth seeing.
The pictures don’t even do it justice by the way!
The attention to detail is spectacular, with all aspects of the building having some significant artwork, as seen above the intricate sculptures and stained glass work.
Next stop was the Royal Square, which is worth the visit and has beautiful Palladian style buildings surrounding a courtyard with a fountain. We had a coffee and croissant while enjoying the sunny view around us.
Of course, no trip to Barcelona would be complete without a visit to Gaudy’s world famous Park Guell
To finish our day off, we headed back to the main square in Barcelona and did a spot of shopping there. They have a great selection of high street shops and a flagship H&M. There is something for everyone in Barcelona and the train stops at all the main hotspots so grab a day pass to save money. The only thing is, it is not that well-equipped for prams or wheelchairs. We had 3 of us to manage carrying one pram as we couldn’t find lifts at all stations. Keep that in mind when travelling with a baby/small children or if you’re in a wheelchair or disabled. You may need to check the stations before arrival in case.
The train stations are all below ground so the stops are accessible from most of the main thoroughfare. Our last stop train station for the day had a bar in the Main Street opposite this fabulous fountain all lit up at night. A perfect spot to sip a beer while we rested our feet. Phew that was a lot of walking! Totally worth it though. We were glad we managed to make it around Barcelona in a day. Looking forward to our next trip.
Make your way to Las Ramblas if you get a chance. It is a huge market with plenty of stalls, shops, eateries and bars. It is quite touristy but also cultural so worth a visit.
If you are a tapas fan, you will be spoilt for choice. The food is fantastic and oh-so Spanish. Yum!
Have you been to Barcelona? If so, where were your fave places to visit? Let us know in the comments.
