How would someone contact your loved ones in case of an emergency? If you have a smartphone with a pin code on it, the answer may be who knows?! Well I know, and I’m sharing it with you today.
I attended a CPR course this morning and we discussed setting up ICE (in case of emergency) contacts in your phone. Before smartphones came along you just had to add the letters ICE next to your spouse / mum / best friend / neighbours name in your contacts so that if anything ever happened to you paramedics or the like could contact someone close to you immediately. These days, however, our phone is an impenetrable force to be reckoned with and it made me wonder how the heck someone would get those details if they really needed them.
If you already know the answer, I salute you. You have explored your phone a lot better than I have! But if you don’t, I’m here to tell you that it is actually a very simple process. And an important one. If you do one thing today, please set this up. Your loved ones will thank you.
I HAVE AN APPLE I-PHONE…
You know that Health app that comes pre-installed? Turns out its super useful! Who knew? When you go into the app you can set up a Medical ID to include your:
- Name
- Date of Birth
- Blood Type
- Donor Preference
- Weight
- Height
- Known Medical Conditions
- Current Medications
- Emergency Contacts
And once you add this information and save it, people can access it even when you phone is locked. To test it, try to unlock your phone without entering a passcode or touch ID. You will see the word emergency on the bottom left corner, and once you press that you will be taken to a call screen where you should see a medical ID icon on the bottom left hand corner. Click that icon and you have all your details right there. How cool is that? Now go – go and set it up right now.
I HAVE AN ANDROID…
Unfortunately, I don’t have an Andriod to test but I am led to believe from the articles I read that you should already have an emergency contact feature in your phone’s settings. If that’s not the case, there are also several apps that provide a similar function, including Medical ID which is free.
I HAVE A NOKIA 3310 THAT YOU CAN PLAY SNAKE ON…
Just pop ICE next to your selected contacts name. But seriously, who still has a Nokia 3310??
I HAVE A PHONE THAT’S NOT LISTED…
I don’t want to give any false information here so a simple “How to add emergency contacts to a XXXXX locked screen” google search will help you find an appropriate instructional guide. Or contact the company and ask for some more information. I’m sure they will be happy to help!
Well there you have it friends. I know it’s never pleasant having to think about emergency situations but I think we can all agree we’ll breathe easier knowing that if one does strike, all the information medical personnel will need is just a click away.
