I totally get it. Some days it’s easy to get up and face the day with a huge ol’ grin; and some days it seems like you can’t even look at your self in the mirror, let alone face the world!
I have wanted to hide from people so many times in my life (and actually did sometimes), because I didn’t feel confident about myself or my abilities. It’s a good thing I learned how to be and act confident even though my irritating low-self-esteem voice kept whispering that I might not be up to the tasks I had to accomplish.
Need a booster shot of confidence to slash fear and slay your goals? I thought you’d never ask! Here is what I learned and now practice to remain confident no matter what’s going on inside or around me.
Know that you are enough
First off, know that you are enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know you’ve heard it all before. But trust me and take advice from someone who at one point did not know this, but who today use it as one of the main principles of being an awesome person and entrepreneur. To do this you have to begin to see yourself as this unique, limited-edition being who was created with a distinct purpose to change the world for the better in some way. And, if that is true, it means you came here with all you needed to achieve your purpose – including the inner compass to meet the right people and opportunities to help you along your journey.
Failure is a step toward success
Hey, it’s really, really a fact! So don’t feel so badly if you’re failing at your goals right now. If you don’t believe me take a look at most of the awesome entrepreneurs who have absolutely crushed their goals of changing the world, and made loads of money while doing it. Almost all of them have a similar story – they stumbled and failed miserably several times along their journeys to success.
Ever heard of Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind your iphone and ipad and other products in that brand? Well, Steve Jobs was kicked out of his own company he created as a boy (Apple) and he had to start all over again with NexTT and the ‘i’ line of products. And what about Bill Gates. Or Mark Zuckerberg? These are all people who went out smiling even when they lost everything they had worked for, even when they kept failing, because they knew that failure was a part of getting it right. So, hold your chin up and keep going!
Know for sure “This too shall pass”
At times the world is like a weight on your back and Murphy’s Law seems to be making fun of you because every little thing is going wrong! Then you start to believe that you’re no good at what you do and your confidence level drops below zero. Well, I have great news to share. It doesn’t last. I’m pretty sure you know what I’m talking about, too. Like have you ever had a really, really bad week that you just wanted to end? Like geez, what now?! But then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, you realize that you made it through. You might be a little worse for wear, but you’re fine overall. The bad week and bad thoughts about yourself are history, and you’re looking forward to enjoying your days ahead. This scenario is likely to repeat itself again (hence the term “this TOO shall pass”), but after a while you get to trust the process and learn to ride the wave of discomfort with more ease and grace.
Fake it ’til you make it
If you’re a little shy sometimes, like I am, you might have to fake confidence sometimes. But isn’t that cheating, though?! No. Not at all. See, if you are facing your low confidence fears by showing up at that appointment or interview or you reached out to that client you’ve been avoiding to call, that can never be cheating. You’ve already placed yourself outside of your comfort zone, so half the actual confidence battle is won. However, you might have to fake a little enthusiasm, though.
The trick is not to only start your Emmy-Award-winning confidence role when you’re already communicating with the other person; it’s a better strategy to practice over and over (preferably in a quiet place and in front of a mirror) until you feel more confident about about your body language, tone of voice, and what you are saying. You might still get a bit of the jitters during the actual conversation, but overall you’ll be way more comfortable because you have more structure. Small tip, though: you don’t have to stick to the actual script. You can take note of how the conversation is flowing and improvise if you’d like. Also, remember to smile.

November 13, 2017 at 10:28 pmThis is all so true! My husband actually reminds me “this too shall pass” when we are going through rough times in life. When you are down, it surely isn’t forever!
