There are many and varied strange addictions, addicts stories and some explanations for them. It was a fascinating subject to research so here are some of the best examples and explanations for strange addictions i could find.

Pica Disorder –

1. Eating glass. Crushing lightbulbs to chomp on or chowing down a wine glass. All seems normal for an addict. See a video of the strange addiction and explanation. Here is one addicts story –

2. Eating soap/soap detergent – eating up to 5 bars of soap a week, Tempestt Henderson is addicted.

‘I dabbed the powder onto my tongue and it tasted so sweet, and salty…it just felt so right. I was hooked straight away.’

The nursing student says she knew eating soap was dangerous, but ignored the warning labels on the box in favour of licking the deadly powder daily, from the minute she woke up in the morning. Read the full article here.

4. Drinking urine: “I like warm pee – it’s comforting”. An addicts story –

5. Drinking blood – Michelle is addicted to drinking animal blood. So much so she drinks it like water! She needs 7 litres a week and can’t live without it. She even cooks with it. She loves making REAL bloody Mary cocktails. Read the full article here.

8. Drinking air freshener – “I love air freshener, i love it, i just love it”. This addict is hooked on it –

10. Tattoos – “I’d already got one, so where’s the harm in more? Like you’ve crossed a threshold so there’s nothing to stop you.” One middle-aged addict who has OCD tells his story below –

11. Video games – 

Gaming disorder is characterized by the following:

  • A pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior in which the user loses sense of self-control over the situation.
  • Priority given to gaming that overrides other interests and daily activities.
  • Continuing the same damaging gaming behavior despite negative consequences such as deterioration of personal, family, social, educational, occupational interactions and responsibilities.

Addictively playing video game Fortnite could indicate something more worrisome, according to the World Health Organization.

12. Trichotillomania – pulling hair. The addiction is as real as it gets. A You-Tube star addict explains –

13. Oniomania – shopping addiction. We all love a bit of retail therapy. Some destroy their lives with it. 

14. Eating chalk – Eating 10 sticks of a chalk a day was normal for this woman.

15. Plastic surgery – the most famous one i remember being the Cat Woman who after finding out her husband had an affair, spent $4,000,000 to look like a cat. Here are some other famous shockers, including Cher and (no surprise), Heidi Montag. Check them out here.

16. Social media – This video sums it up pretty well.

17. Eating furniture – “On a daily basis i eat around 10 pieces of couch cushion. On a binge i will spend about 20 minutes just eating furniture.”
